The short answer
Bus is the practical overland route. FlixBus runs from Sofia and from Thessaloniki, and we could confirm times for both on 25 October 2026. For Pristina we could not. By air, see Skopje airport. Once you arrive, getting there from Skopje covers the last stretch to Matka Canyon.
Times below are the operator’s minimums and listed departures, not a timetable. Check the current booking page before you plan around them.
Sofia to Skopje
FlixBus gives a minimum journey of about 5 hours, with 2 departures a day. The first leaves at 07:00 and the last at 17:30. In Sofia it lists four stops: Serdika bus station, Sofia Central Bus Station, Sofia Bus Station West and the Vasil Levski Monument. In Skopje it arrives at Skopje bus station, Nikola Karev 20.
Wikivoyage, a secondary source, describes at least four departures a day and about 5.5 hours. That differs from FlixBus’s two departures. It may be counting other operators, or it may be out of date. Its fare of EUR 25 is undated, so we give no price.
The one border crossing we can confirm is Gyueshevo in Bulgaria to Deve Bair in North Macedonia. Wikipedia lists it as open, on the A2 side in North Macedonia. We have not confirmed that every Sofia bus uses it.
Thessaloniki to Skopje
FlixBus gives a minimum of 4 hours, with 2 departures a day. The first leaves at 08:30 and the last at 15:30. In Thessaloniki it lists the train station on Monastiriou 28, and a stop in front of the train station at Monastiriou 63. It arrives at Skopje bus station, Nikola Karev 20, 1000 Skopje.
We have not confirmed the border crossing name for this route, so we do not name one.
Pristina to Skopje
Here our sources are thin. Wikivoyage’s Skopje page lists a Pristina bus at 550 denars, with no date. The FlixBus Pristina page we tried returned no route data, so we cannot give a duration, an operator or departure times.
We also could not confirm the border crossing. The names often quoted were not verifiable from the pages we could open, so we leave them out. Ask the station or your accommodation, and check the booking page the week you go.
Trains
Wikivoyage says that, as of 2025, there are no international trains to or from North Macedonia. It says a Skopje to Sofia line is under construction, expected around 2027. We cannot promise a train from Thessaloniki or anywhere else. Wikivoyage also says Skopje train tickets cannot be bought by card.
Skopje bus station
Wikivoyage says Skopje has a single bus terminal, about a 15 minute walk from the centre (15 to 20 minutes from the central square, on its Skopje page). The railway station is in the same transport centre. It says to buy tickets at the central booths marked БЛАГАЈНА, and to convert online codes to paper tickets at the counter.
Wikivoyage also says there are ATMs near the bus station, and an exchange office open 06:30 to 18:30. For the canyon, local bus 60 runs from the Transport Center next to the national bus station. Wikivoyage puts Matka “50 minutes outside of central Skopje” and gives no fare.
Border waits
GOV.UK says the EU’s new Entry/Exit System is being implemented across the Schengen area, and that you should expect longer waits on journeys to and from it. Its latest update, on 13 August 2026, added information on wait times. That applies when leaving North Macedonia for Schengen countries, so build slack into any onward trip.
Rules to know
Read entry requirements before you cross. GOV.UK says you must register with the local police within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels usually do this at check-in. If you stay somewhere else, you are responsible.
If you drive, Wikivoyage says your Green Card should have an uncancelled “MK” box, and that guards often ask for original car documents, with inconsistent enforcement.
